Who is Whitney Cummings, and why should you and an important cross section of the TV industry care?
The basics: A magna cum laude grad from the University of Pennsylvania, Cummings thought of getting into journalism but decided on the next best thing -- stand-up. She moved to Los Angeles, got noticed, which is not all that hard to do for statuesque brunettes with rapid-fire patter and infectious laughs. TV beckoned. She's a regular on the Comedy Central roast circuit and on E!'s "Chelsea Lately."
But last week, Bob Greenblatt, NBC's new chief of entertainment, had this to say about Cummings to assembled critics in California at the press tour: "She is this year's 'It girl.' I think we should institute another drinking game. Every time we say her name, you will all be drunk by the end of the day."
Not only does she star in NBC's new Thursday sitcom "Whitney," but Cummings also has the highly unusual position of being an It girl at CBS, too. With "Sex and the City" producer Michael Patrick King, she is co-creator of the new Kat Dennings comedy "2 Broke Girls."
Cummings said at the tour, "I was joking the other day about how my real life feels like a TV show, and my TV life feels real."
That's fine -- just no drinking games on the set, please.
