Why Olbermann will be back Tuesday
And just like that, the "indefinite" suspension is over. Keith Olbermann is back tomorrow night. The statement, via prez Phil Griffin last night::
There has been some excellent reporting on this story around the web, but I'm still not sure the real reason has been revealed for this suspension - and perhaps won't, at least for a while. But certainly there had to be some other reason for this because political donations are - if not routine - hardly unknown among hosts on the cable networks. .
My speculattion: That when this was broken by Politico lat week, it posed a certain amount of embarassment for MSNBC and parent NBC which is going through the process of getting government approval for the Comcast merger. There's a new sheriff in town - a GOP-dominated Congress - and the network needed to show it wasn't dominated by Democrat-funding megaphones like Keith O.
So, the suspension - brief and to the point, delivering the message that MSNBC needed to send.
Meanwhile, there was simply no way Keith would not be returning. He delivers 1.2 million viewers a night - you simply don't replace that kind of pull instantly, plus, he's the lynchpin of the new Lean Forward image.
And so it goes in cable land.
