What to stream: Conjure up more witchy movies along with 'Practical Magic 2'

If "Practical Magic 2” is conjuring up all the cozy, spooky feelings, despite it still feeling like summer, maybe you want to call in the fall with some witchy movies to feel more autumnal.

First up, rewatching the original "Practical Magic" is a requirement. The 1998 Griffin Dunne movie is a nostalgic classic comfort watch, a bit silly, but fun nonetheless. It’s streaming on HBO Max, so mix the margaritas and pop the corn for a movie night in.

Make it a double feature with another ‘90s fave, "The Craft," which had every teenage girl donning the black tights and baby tees. A teen coven stomps the halls of a Los Angeles high school, seeking revenge on their bullies, until things spiral out of control. Starring Fairuza Balk, Robin Tunney, Neve Campbell and Rachel True, this is an annual October rewatch. Stream it on HBO Max.

For something a little more scary-spooky, stream Robert Eggers’ "The Witch," starring Anya-Taylor Joy in her breakout role as a young girl surviving a harsh existence in Colonial New England with her pilgrim family. When an imposing goat, Black Phillip, poses a question about "living deliciously," she has to make a decision about what kind of life she’s going to lead. Stream it on Netflix or Kanopy.

In a similarly gruesome but more existential vein, check out Goran Stolevski’s "You Won’t Be Alone," a Macedonian fable about a witch who jumps from body to body, learning lessons about life along the way. Starring Noomi Rapace, this is the tale of a witch that’s more philosophical than anything else. Rent it on Amazon Prime Video or Apple iTunes.

Or take a spin with "The Love Witch," Anna Biller’s modern but retro-styled instant classic about a witch who casts love spells, to varying degrees of success. Starring Samantha Robinson as the groovy witch who yearns for connection, this is a truly singular piece of cinema. Stream it on Kanopy, Peacock, the Criterion Channel or Tubi.

For something a bit more cozy and family-friendly, queue up the seasonal classic "Hocus Pocus" starring Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy and Sarah Jessica Parker on Disney+ (but skip "Hocus Pocus 2”). Follow it up with the 1971 fave "Bedknobs and Broomsticks," starring Angela Lansbury, about a group of children who go to live with an aunt during World War II and find out she’s a witch. Also streaming on Disney+.

Rene Clair's charming 1942 comedy "I Married a Witch" stars Veronica Lake as a 17th century witch who comes back to life 300 years later and causes nothing but trouble for political hopeful Fredric March. It's HBO Max and Hulu.

Finally, check out the 1958 screwball comedy "Bell, Book and Candle," a Technicolor masterpiece starring Kim Novak as a modern witch who puts a love spell on her neighbor (James Stewart). Stream it on Tubi or rent it on Prime Video or iTunes.
