The Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County and The Plantage are presenting a Fall Gardening Symposium on Saturday, Sept. 21 in East Hampton, and the best part is that the widely respected, world reknowned Allan Armitage will be the keynote speaker.
Armitage is a horticulturist, author, researcher and professor emeritus at the University of Georgia, where he also oversees the research and trial gardens, which are considered to be among the finest in the country. With a reputation as a very engaging speaker, Armitage finds that his classes at UG fill quickly. But you can snag a seat in his audience and listen to him speak on two separate topics: "Herbaceous Perennials and Annuals for Sustainable Gardens in the Northeast (and particularly on Long Island)" and "Garden Legends."
Other speakers at the day-long event, which runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., will include June Croon ("About the Plantage: From the Beginning and its Impact), Chris Kelly ("Pollinator's Garden") and Margery Daughtrey ("Outwitting the Diseases of Herbaceous Perennials and Annuals" ). Afterward, attendees will board a bus and head for a tour of Longhouse Reserve.
