Another tomato contest to enter
If you missed Newsday's fourth annual Great Long Island Tomato Challenge last Friday and have a big, tiny or strange tomato growing in the garden, you might have another shot at tomato fame.
Hicks Nurseries in Old Westbury is holding its annual tomato contest on Saturday, Sept. 11. Tomatoes will be accepted from 9 to 11:45 that morning, and a winner will be announced at noon. Heaviest, largest circumference, most unusual looking and tiniest tomatoes will win prizes.
Here's the fine print: No frozen or previously frozen tomatoes will be accepted, and tomatoes must be ripe. Only a tomato grown by the person named on the entry form may be submitted. Only one prize will be awarded per individual or family (household) for each category. Second entries will be allowed and recognized, but will not be eligible for an additional prize. Tomatoes entered into the contest may be picked up after 5 p.m.
Children age 12 and under are encouraged to bring in their own-grown tomatoes, and will receive a special certificate. They also may enter the contest.
