Bark for Life raises funds for American Cancer Society

Poodles, Labrador retrievers, St. Bernards and other canines are invited to attend the inaugural Bark for Life event to raise money for the fight against cancer.
From 12 to 3 p.m. Oct. 18, beginning at the Rotary Pavilion in Thompson Park, people may bring their dogs — on a leash — to walk around the park and enjoy activities. Each participant is asked to donate $20 prior to the event, or $25 on the day.
“When we do events we don’t allow dogs,” said Don Boshart, American Cancer Society community executive. “This gives people the opportunity to bring a pet out and fight cancer. It’s a way to give back.”
Mr. Boshart said all funds raised will be included in the total amount raised for the nonprofit’s Relay for Life event in June for Jefferson County.
Bark for Life is one of many American Cancer Society fundraisers held prior to Relay for Life. It also is one of many events on city property where dogs are allowed.
The city established a dog ban at public events held on city-owned property after a 2-year-old boy was mauled by a dog in August 2011 at the summer farmers market. City Manager Sharon Addison said it is at her discretion if dogs may be allowed.
“As with any event, I’ve been open to (having) dogs,” she said. “You just have to get approval from the city. There are requirements — they have to be on a leash.”
The ACS-sponsored event also requires written proof of rabies vaccination.
It is up to event organizers to first approach the city, Ms. Addison said. Mr. Boshart said he is happy the event has come together.
Registration for Bark for Life includes a bandana for each dog. Event activities include a pet look-alike contest, dog demonstrations, long and short walk routes, vendor displays and specials, cancer information and a pet Halloween costume contest.
