Plants to get you in the Halloween mood

Candy? Check. 

Pumpkin? Check.

Scarecrow? Check.

Think you're ready for Halloween? How about some spooky sounding plants? There's Ghost weigela, Black Lace elderberry, Blondy wintercreeper and Abracadabra hydrangea, to name a few.

And if you want more, check out Amy Stewart's fun book "Wicked Plants: A book of botanical atrocities," which begins with a warning about the "unfathomable evils" that lurk within the plant kingdom, among them a tree with poison daggers, a red seed that stops the heart, a vine that intoxicates and a shrub that causes intolerable pain. The author of "Plant Confidential" goes on to profile dozens of badly behaved plants that can cause irreparable harm to humans. 

Then there's the seasonably appropriate "Black Plants: 75 striking choices for the garden," by Paul Bonine. While the photos depicting bugbane, lily-of-the-Nile, devil's tongue, chocolate cosmos, Dracula orchid, bat flower, voodoo lily and mourning widow, among others, attest that the plants are too pretty to belong anywhere near the Addams family's garden, they certainly would make a dramatic statement in yours.
