Direct flight: Lancaster and Italy
AMISH 'MUD' SALES
Buggies, handmade quilts, livestock, tools -- you never know what you're going to find at a Lancaster County, Pa., "mud sale." A spring tradition, the auctions and tag sales are held on Saturday mornings through mid-May by fire departments throughout Amish country. It's a chance to nab antiques, Amish-made furniture and other finds at bargain prices -- but you'll have to get up early. To make it easier, consider a stay at a B&B the night before. See padutchcountry.com for upcoming auctions and a directory of lodgings.
CULINARY TOURS IN ITALY
Food & Wine Trails, a California-based tour company, is offering three new culinary excursions to Italy this year that will appeal to foodies.
Of note, a five-night Cinque Terre tour that will immerse travelers in the food, wine and culture of the Liguria region of Italy. A hiking guide and historian will lead the group on treks among the area's five coastal villages, with stops for cooking lessons, shopping, sightseeing and -- of course -- meals. The trip costs 2,650 euros (about $3,737) double occupancy and includes accommodations, three daily meals and various activities. Airfare and transfers to and from Cinque Terre are additional. Departures April 11 and Sept. 19.
The two other new tours involve a Tuscan wine celebration and a 10-day wine cruise along the Italian Peninsula. Details at 800-367-5348 or foodandwinetrails.com.
