Dogs compete in dock diving — jumping and swimming — at Peconic event

Long Island’s superdogs will be heading to the North Fork this weekend to prove they can do more than roll over and shake hands.

Dozens of dogs from across the Island are expected to compete at the first North Fork Dock Diving Weekend. Pit bulls, golden retrievers and other water-loving breeds will be diving off a dock into a 20-by-40-foot pool. Three events test their ability to jump far and high and swim to retrieve a toy.

“Most of the dogs on Long Island swim anyway, so why not get them into a competition?” says Kim Loper, owner of Harbor Pet in Greenport, which is co-hosting with Greenport Harbor Brewing Co.

Pet owners can bring noncompeting dogs (as long as they are leashed and well-behaved), shop for pet supplies at 15 vendors and purchase food and beer. Pet experts will be on hand to answer your questions.

Here are four canine contenders expected to make a big splash at the dock-diving pool.

Tango Munch

Tango is an Instagram star with 25,000 followers. He’s known for his ability to balance household items such as a glass of wine or up to a dozen doughnuts on his face and head. He’s also “a big air” jumper, according to Geymayr.

Parker

Parker is certified by Therapy Dog International and visits with special needs children and adults with dementia. “It took a while to get Parker comfortable in the water and jumping off the dock, but now he can’t get enough of flying through the air,” Tanenbaum says.

Allie was rescued from a shelter where she was scheduled for euthanasia, and then adopted and retrained. “She had some fear and aggression issues, but she now is awesome and is the friendliest, most outgoing dog,” Towers says. Allie trains for dock diving by jumping off rocks into a river in the Catskills.

Doc was adopted from an Islip animal shelter where he’d wound up after being found outside on the street and covered in yellow paint. This is his second dock diving competition. “He is still getting the hang of it but loves the water,” Towers says.
