Parents alarmed about bullying should take notice of a new series of books about a once- mean shark named Captain McFinn and his underwater friends.
The latest picture book, to be released in early June, is "Captain McFinn & Friends Rock!" It joins the recently released books, "The Legend of Captain McFinn & Friends" and "Captain McFinn & Friends Meet Coral Rose."
The colorfully illustrated stories center around the mean characters that Captain McFinn — once a bully — encounters in his adventures in the sea. Created by Phyllis Cafaro for her grandchildren, the stories aim to teach children about bullying and how to defuse it.
The hardcover books retail for $17.99. There are also softcover books ($9.99), an activity book ($5.99), a music CD ($9.99) and, come fall, an app and e-book. The series is being launched with a new anti-bullying program that is to be introduced in classrooms at the start of the new school year.
The books are aimed toward children ages 4 to 9, although my third-grader, already reading Harry Potter and other advanced chapter books with his friends, thought the stories were too young for him.
