Baby chicks hatching this spring at Long Island libraries

Ten Nassau County libraries will be hatching baby chicks this spring.
A chick incubation workshop, given by the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County, was held at the Nassau Library System in Uniondale. The librarians who attended will be given eggs to start the incubation process, which takes 21 days.
The libraries hatching chicks in the coming weeks include East Meadow, Freeport, Garden City, Great Neck, Hewlett-Woodmere, Island Park, Mineola, Rockville Centre, Wantagh and Westbury.
"Being able to follow the progress of incubation not only supports STEM learning, something we are passionate about in Nassau County public libraries, but it's exciting and fun," said Renee McGrath, manager of youth services for the Nassau Library System. "We can't wait for the chicks to hatch."
All of the libraries with incubators will keep them in public areas, but you might want to call ahead to find out when the chicks are expected as the egg delivery dates may vary for each library, McGrath said.
Once the chicks hatch, they will remain at the libraries for about seven days before they will be returned to the Cornell Cooperative Extension farm in Yaphank.
