I have a friend whose 9-year-old daughter is being bullied in school, so when I saw the new book “Bully” (Putnam Juvenile, $17.99) depicting young girls on the cover, I asked her to weigh in.

Written by Patricia Polacco, the book is about a girl named Lyla, a cheerleader who takes on vengeful classmates putting down others, including her friend Jamie, on Facebook.

My friend’s daughter liked it, and Mom, too, especially since it seems that anti-bullying lessons aren’t usually told from a girl’s point of view. She has struggled with the right way to handle the clique that keeps excluding her daughter.

“It helped her see where she had been bullied, and we talked about ways she could stand up for others when she sees it happening,” my friend said.

You can never start too young.
