The yeti crab’s legs are covered with hair, the Jesus Christ lizard runs on water, and the flying snake launches itself off trees and soars through the air by flattening out its body.

Such lesser known life forms and the odd aspects that define them are featured in the new book “Unusual Creatures: A Mostly Accurate Account of Some of Earth's Strangest Animals” (Chronicle, $16.99) by Michael Hearst. The 108-page illustrated book offers everything from an animal's scientific name to fast facts.

The book is aimed for children ages 8 to 12, like my son, who can't put it down, but adults will enjoy it, too, especially because of the humor.
