It's simple. The more produce you buy from now until May 31, the more money will be raised for cancer research.
The second annual Get Healthy, Give Hope campaign, hosted by Stop & Shop supermarkets and Produce for Kids, will make a donation to local children's cancer research programs based on the amount of produce you buy.
"Partnering with Produce for Kids is a great way to provide resources and inspiration to our communities to incorporate produce into every meals," said Arlene Putterman, manager of public and community relations for Stop & Shop's New York Metro Division.
During the month of May, Stop & Shop will offer shoppers collectible Produce for Kids Ideal Meals, which are quick, easy and healthy meal ideas and can be found in displays featuring the characters from LazyTown, a health-focused children's television show on the Sprout channel.
The Ideal Meal ideas are free and offer chef-created suggestions for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks and dessert, featuring fruits and veggies as the main ingredients.
Here's a sample of one of the kid-friendly, healthy snack ideas:
Guacamole Tomato Boats
Ingredients
2 medium tomatoes on the vine
8 Tbsp. guacamole (liberal tablespoonfuls)
8 Tbsp. salsa
4 Tbsp. grated cheddar cheese
Directions
1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees or turn broiler on high.
2. Wash and dry tomatoes.
3. Slice tomatoes in half, cross-sectionwise, and scoop out the insides, being careful not to puncture/tear the bottom of the tomato half.
4. With open side of tomato facing up, fill with guacamole, then salsa, and garnish with cheddar cheese.
5. Bake/broil until cheese melts, then remove from oven.
