John's Crazy Socks announces Camp Anchor's winning entry

Drumroll, please: The winner of a contest to design socks to commemorate Camp Anchor's 50th summer has been chosen. Alexandria Duran, 26, of Freeport, created a colorful, one-size-fits-all sock using the number 50, anchors and wheelchairs.
Campers at the Town of Hempstead’s Camp Anchor in Lido Beach competed to create a design for John’s Crazy Socks, a Melville company launched by John Cronin of Huntington, who has Down syndrome, with his father, Mark. The Cronins announced the winner and delivered socks to the camp on Thursday. "I picked the winner," John Cronin says.
Duran, who has cerebral palsy, says she is excited seeing her drawing made into a sock. "I'm in shock, actually," she says. "I didn't think it was going to be me out of all the campers. It means a lot that they chose me."
Camp Anchor — which stands for Answering the Needs of Citizens with Handicaps through Organized Recreation — serves 658 people with special needs. John's Crazy Socks donated 600 pairs to the camp to sell at $12 each as a fundraiser, Mark Cronin says. Those are sold out, with proceeds going to the Anchor Program Fund, a nonprofit that funds activities, events, supplies and equipment for programming.
Additional socks will also be sold on the John's Crazy Socks website, and $2 from the sale of each pair will be donated back to the camp, Cronin says. Visit johnscrazysocks.com.
