Long Island children’s musician Danny Weinkauf has released a new song inspired by the 2016 presidential election called “I’m a Girl (Step Aside).”

“We might not have had our first female president, but it seemed a good time to remind little girls of how close we came,” says Weinkauf, a Grammy Award-winning performer who lives in Lynbrook and is also the bass player for the band They Might Be Giants.

Weinkauf wrote the piece, which features Tina Kenny Jones on vocals. The song tells girls how powerful and strong they are, and how this generation of girls can do anything.

The song was also inspired by Weinkauf’s grandmother-in-law, who is 94 and encourages his 14-year-old daughter, Lena, to go after her dreams. “That’s a good message for my daughter,” Weinkauf says.
