A few months ago, I downloaded a free app that has taught me things. It’s teaching me Italian! This app is called Duolingo. It teaches you any language out of the 13 it offers, including Spanish, French, German, Portuguese. It offers a variety of interactive and fun ways to learn a language. When learning, Duolingo uses many different activities to teach you. They use visual and sound. Some activities include you having to repeat what your instructor is saying, matching the English word to the other language, writing a translation, and filling in the blanks. It’s perfect if you want to tap into your family roots and learn the language that your family speaks. You can pick how long you want to practice each day: Casual — 5 minutes, Regular — 10 minutes, Serious — 15 minutes, Insane — 20 minutes.

Don’t worry, you can always go back later to change your goal. Next, it will ask you if you’re a beginner or not. If you’re not a beginner, you will take a placement test to see what you do and don’t know about that language. As long as you are practicing and remembering, you will do great. I love this app because it is really customizable to what you can handle, and how much time you have to practice. I feel this should be used in schools to help kids expand their learning and understanding of different cultures and languages.
