LI girls to build 7-foot-tall sculpture from 3,000 Girl Scout cookie boxes

A 7-foot-tall word sculpture that spells out GIRL will be built today at Roosevelt Field in Garden City by Nassau County Girl Scouts, using 3,000 empty Girl Scout cookie boxes.
The sculpture will be on display at the mall through the weekend and will be part of the Girl Scouts of Nassau County’s Centennial Celebration Cookie Festival from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the mall. In addition to kicking off the annual Girl Scout Cookie selling season, the event marks the 100th anniversary of scouting in Nassau County.
The girls have been working this past week to make the cookie boxes that will form the sculpture. “We need a lot of boxes because these letters are going to be seven feet high,” says Allie McCormick, 13, of Jericho, a member of Troop 3095. “They come flattened and we’re making them into box form.”
Explains Karina Ramnauth, 12, of Valley Stream, a member of Troop 2495: “So far, we had to assemble the cookie boxes into their three-dimensional shape, and tape the bottom and top shut.” The girls will be using those boxes to build the letters from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. today at the North Court, by the mall entrance near Dick’s Sporting Goods.
The G will be made from red Tagalong chocolate-and-peanut-butter cookie boxes; the I from orange Do-Si-Do peanut butter sandwich cookies, the R from blue Trefoil shortbread cookie boxes and the L from green Thin Mint cookie boxes, says Rande Bynum, chief executive of the Girl Scouts of Nassau County. In addition to being the first word of Girl Scouts, GIRL also stands for go-getter, innovator, risk-taker and leader, Bynum says.
Saturday morning's Cookie Festival will include games, activities and a scavenger hunt at Roosevelt Field, 630 Old Country Rd. To participate in the cookie fest activities, register at gsnc.org/programs. The cost is $10 per child and $8 per adult. Girl Scout cookies will be on sale through the end of March.
