Looking for a fun summer activity? Then canoeing is the thing for you to try.

This past summer, my family and I went canoeing on the Peconic River in Riverhead. The Peconic is one of Long Island's largest rivers. We did an 8-mile canoe trip. The instructors taught us how to paddle -- it was hard at first, but as you go, you get used to it.

Along the way, we encountered wildlife, including swans and hawks. The trip was very relaxing. Along the river, there were stops to sit and take a break. On the first break, we were able to swim and eat lunch. The river was slow moving, so we were able to take it all in. On the second break, we were able to swim in a lake. We also went over a little waterfall in the canoe. It was like a short roller coaster ride. After that break, we kept canoeing until the end. The river passed a pizza place in Riverhead. The people eating outside waved to us. We thought that was hilarious.

Our canoe trip was an exciting yet relaxing experience. It was amazing to see all the great scenery. It also gives time for your family to bond. It was an experience I will never forget. The Peconic Paddler can set you up on your adventure. It's at 89 Peconic Ave., Riverhead;
