Do you like horses or merry-go-rounds? Well, if you are on the North Fork of Long Island in the summer, go to the Greenport Carousel. It is located in Mitchell Park and has beautiful views of the bay and Shelter Island. It’s $2 per ride. But sometimes you can get a free ride. There is a golden ring. If you get that ring, then you get a ticket for a free ride.
The coolest part is that it was given to the town by Grumman Aircraft Corp. The carousel is 95 years old. It was originally built in 1920 in upstate New York. The carousel was supposed to be taken apart and moved from town to town. When Grumman bought the carousel, they used it at events. Later it was donated to Greenport Village.
The carousel was also in a movie, “The Devil’s Own,” in 1997, starring Brad Pitt and Harrison Ford. The carousel is a favorite among tourists. In Mitchell Park, right outside the carousel, there are many events where family and friends can enjoy music. It is just another reason why Greenport is a great place to visit.
Info: Open daily in the summer season; from now to Easter, weekends from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
