Honoring a teacher by donating hair
At the end of last school year, I hosted a hair-donating day. Along with many
classmates, teachers, staff and my friends, I donated eight inches of hair in honor of cancer patients, but mainly for one of my favorite teachers, Ms. Angela Sposato, who has been an inspiration to us all.
Some of the teachers and students even shaved their heads in her honor.
Ms. Sposato has been the orchestra teacher at Salk for many years, and I love her. In fall 2012, she found out she had lymphoma, a type of cancer that affects the lymph nodes, and had to leave school for chemotherapy treatments.
My entire class missed her so much. In our school's main office was a box for any gifts people wanted to send her while she was in the hospital. Our school made shirts that said Team Spaz on it.
In the spring, she returned, and the entire school was overjoyed. She wore different wigs every day, including a hot pink wig!
At the hair-donating ceremony, Ms. Sposato made an amazing speech. She said that once she got her real-hair wig, she felt it was a turning point in her recovery.
Then, everyone who participated had to pick a relative or teacher to cut their ponytail. We all got our hair evened out, and many classmates stopped in during their lunch period to see
everyone who cut their hair.
Friends were so inspired, they decided to cut their hair right then and there. The whole room of people just seemed to be overjoyed that day.
I am so glad that Ms. Sposato is feeling well. She is and always will be an inspiration to us all.
