We all get gifts from aunts and uncles, cousins, grandparents and friends. Getting is easy, but saying thank you in a note — is that so easy?

We asked 122 kids in the fourth and fifth grades if they had ever written a thank-you note on their own without being asked. Here are our results:

Yes: 58

No: 64

We were very surprised to find out that a lot of them said yes. We think a lot of times our parents are encouraging us to write the note — even before we play with or use whatever we were given.

We think everyone likes to get mail, so sending a thank-you note has extra-special meaning. We think sending a note is respectful and shows responsibility. Now we hope that soon everyone will say they have written a thank-you note without being asked.
