Kohl's Scholarship awarded to Long Island students

Thirteen New York students, including two from Long Island, were recently awarded Kohl's Cares Scholarships.
More than 37,000 students were nominated nationwide for having a positive effect in their communities. Nearly 200 volunteers received $1,000 scholarships to be used toward their education. Winners were chosen based on initiative, leadership, generosity and project benefits and outcome.
Here's a little more information about the Long Island winners:
Brea Dowel, 8, of Selden, co-founded First Company Pink, an organization dedicated to raising funds for breast cancer research after her aunt was diagnosed. In 2013, she hand-decorated and sold nearly 400 pumpkins to raise more than $12,000 to help the fight against breast cancer.
After learning that a young women's leadership convention did not have a keynote speaker like the young men's conference did, Adriana Rubertone, 17, of Glen Head, took action. She invited U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand to attend. Gillibrand was moved by Rubertone's commitment and spoke to the 350 girls at the convention. With a passion for equal rights, Rubertone started a club at school that focuses on equality.
Kohl's has recognized more than 22,000 kids since the program began in 2001, with more than $4.3 million in scholarships and prizes. For more information, visit kohlskids.com.
