Last July the kids at Mount Sinai Elementary School had their second annual bobwhite quail release at Brookhaven State Park, led by teacher Kevin Walsh. The students raise and release quail to help decrease the tick population and restore the balance of the ecosystem. My brother, Michael, had fun raising and releasing them. The group even had a QuailCam to watch the chicks hatch and grow.

When the quails were old enough, the students took them deep into the woods to a special release spot. They were aided by a park ranger. It was interesting to watch the quails after their release as they gathered together in coveys to protect one another. This year’s class is planning another release later this year.
