The Long Island Children's Museum is hosting its own birthday party this weekend, and everyone is invited to the bash.
For 20 years, the Children’s Museum has been entertaining – and educating – kids from Nassau and Suffolk counties and beyond. It’s gone from a small site in a donated space to a nationally recognized museum building at 11 E. Davis Ave. in Garden City, on Nassau County’s Museum Row.
Visitors this weekend will learn about birthday traditions around the world, including how the days are celebrated in Germany, Greece, Demark, South Africa and Ireland. They’ll learn why children wear crowns on their birthdays, what to do if evil spirits are looking for an invitation to the party and which cultures give a key as a prized birthday present.
Museum-goers can also see live performances in the museum's theater and around the building. Liz Joyce’s “King Midas” will be performed at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday. On Sunday, the kid’s music band Milkshake is center stage at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Members of the National Circus Project will also perform both days.
Admission each day is two tickets for $20. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; a museum-wide celebration takes place between 12:30 and 4:30 p.m. All events are included with museum admission on a first-come, first-served basis.
