Long Island Children’s Museum opens Andy Warhol exhibit

A new summerlong exhibit at the Long Island Children’s Museum highlights the art of Andy Warhol. Warhol focused on common objects in his pop art.
The exhibit, which opened June 4, includes a silk-screen studio, art gallery, and costume and book center. In the silk-screen studio, children will see the silk-screen process and design an original image out of newsprint to take home. In the art gallery, they’ll see original prints from Warhol’s “Myths” series that includes fantasy characters, such as Mickey Mouse and the Wicked Witch of the West. In the costume area, visitors can dress up like the characters in some of Warhol’s paintings.
During the summer, the museum has also scheduled artist-in-residence programs. Painter Keith Gamache and photographer Sandra Carrion will each lead five days of hands-on workshops for children. Gamache will lead “Connect the Dots” from July 25-29, and Carrion will teach the transferring of black-and-white photos into pieces of art.
On Aug. 4, the museum will host “Wonderful Warhol,” a free afternoon of activities and crafts inspired by the artist.The museum is open 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. and is closed Mondays.
