New educational apps for kids

More than 30 percent of children in the U.S. use iPad apps. With the thousands of kid-friendly apps available, many parents would prefer that their children choose skill-building ones over pure entertainment.
Maria Bailey, host of Mom Talk Radio, the first syndicated radio show for moms, chose five new apps for kids that are fun and educational.
1. Zorbit's Math Adventure: This new iPad/iPhone game teaches math concepts such as counting, characterizing shapes and colors. By featuring a true narrative and characters with quirky personalities, Zorbit allows children to learn entirely on their own, as they listen to the story and play. Price: $3.99.
2. Music Learning Lab: Little ones can learn fundamental principles of music through lessons, games and a creative environment where they can create their own songs and see them performed by the Music Learning Lab friends. Price: $4.99.
3. Spellyfish: This underwater phonics adventure helps kids master spelling and reading. Spellyfish guides children through different exercises designed to help them learn primary letter sounds and names. Price: Free.
4. Endless Alphabet: Learn the alphabet by following each letter with its own personality, a different voice and a cute animated body when touched. Each word features an interactive puzzle game with talking letters and a short animation illustrating the definition. Price: $5.99.
5. Gus on the Go: The younger the child, the easier it is to learn new languages. Kids can go with Gus the Owl on an interactive learning adventure around the globe, teaching basic nouns through a variety of games. Price: $3.99.
