A glow emanates from the cauldron in Kate McHugh's colored pencil drawing called "Malevolent." A skeleton with a jack-o'-lantern head stirs the potion under a full moon. "I wanted to capture the whole feeling of darkness and malevolence," McHugh says.

McHugh, 17, of Shoreham, created the piece after her AP Studio Art teacher at Shoreham-Wading River High School told her about a "scary" art competition presented by the Huntington Arts Council in honor of Halloween.

Now, the high school senior's piece is on display as part of the third annual "Nightmare on Main Street" student art exhibit at The Main Street Petite Gallery in Huntington. Thirty-two pieces by Long Island students in kindergarten through 12th grade will be displayed through Monday. "We've got pastels, wire-and-stone, digital collage, photography, watercolor and more," says Maureen Starr, public relations manager for the Arts Council.

On the youngest end of the spectrum of artists is Ben Levitsky, 5, of Huntington, who submitted a crayon on paper entry called "Inside the Closet." "It's a monster tree that's really spooky," says the kindergartner. "It has four eyes, and it has some spikes. It has some hands, and it has orange feet."
