Oh My Girls, a new gathering place for girls 8 to 18, has given another meaning to "chat room." Omg!, despite the text-y moniker, is a screen-free zone, so the "Chat Room" isn't online; it's literally a room where girls talk about different issues of importance, led by an adult.
Omg! also offers fitness classes in its exercise studio and cooking classes in its jumbo kitchen, some back-to-back so that girls can do both in one afternoon. In cooking class, they'll make healthful meals; on certain days, recipes will be vegetarian or gluten-free.
"We are on a mission to help girls grow up in a better environment, empowering girls to feel better about themselves and to relate to one another better," says co-owner Lisa Rosen of Roslyn Heights, who has two daughters, Talia, 11, and Kaylie, 8, as well as a son, Jacob, 14. Rosen's business partner, Claire Lieber-Saul of Jericho, has a daughter Sarah, 11.
"I think it's going to be really helpful," says Rebecca Weisberger, 11, of Syosset, of a recent bullying chat room group she participated in. "Now that they're putting it in front of you and saying, 'What would you do?' if the real situation happens, I'm going to have a lot more information about what to do." Rebecca was also recently diagnosed with celiac disease, and she says she's looking forward to learning recipes she can make at home.
