Open Broadway show auditions on Saturday for kids

One great thing about living on Long Island is the proximity to New York City – and Broadway. If you have a child who’s just salivating to be on that great stage, that dream is within geographic reach. And this weekend, in fact, could be his or her big break.
Casting directors are seeking to fill the lead role of Ralphie and the parts of his classmates for a 2012 Broadway production of "A Christmas Story: The Musical!," based on the 1983 holiday movie. They’re having an open casting call on Saturday at Pearl Studios, 500 8th Ave. in Manhattan, 12th floor. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m., with auditions from noon to 5 p.m.
There are a few requirements: Kids should be ages 8 to 13 and can’t be taller than 4’11. Boys’ voices should be unchanged.
Contenders need to prepare a brief, rhythmic, classic Broadway song that shows their voice and personality and must bring sheet music in the correct key (an accompanist is provided but may not transpose). Bring a photo and resume.
In case you’ve never seen “A Christmas Story,” here’s what it’s about: An Indiana boy in the 1940s who has one Christmas wish -- a Red Ryder BB gun. The photo here shows cast members from the 2011 national tour of the show. The Broadway show begins rehearsals on Oct. 1; the production runs Nov. 6 to Dec. 30.
