Shark Week fun on Long Island for families
To kick off Discovery Channel's 28th annual Shark Week, some family-friendly places on Long Island are celebrating the beloved predator.
The Whaling Museum and Education Center (301 Main St., Cold Spring Harbor) will celebrate Shark Week starting Tuesday, July 7 through Friday, July 10 with a film about the science of sharks showing daily at 3 p.m. There will also be arts ands crafts. On Sunday, July 12, the museum will host SharkFest! at 1 p.m. Kids ages 5 to 12 can touch a Megalodon tooth, see a real shark jaw and excavate a shark fossil. Price: Free with museum admission ($6 adults, $5 children).
The Long Island Aquarium (431 E. Main St., Riverhead) will host its regularly scheduled shark talks and lectures with experts. Throughout the week of July 6, there will also be a shark scavenger hunt, shark-themed craft for kids, and shark dissections. The aquarium will also give away shark fin hats while supplies last.
