If you can’t celebrate on the official Groundhog Day on Saturday, you'll have another chance at 1 p.m. Sunday at Sweetbriar Nature Center in Smithtown.
Kids will have a scavenger hunt to learn facts about groundhogs and play with shadows. They will meet some other animals and see how they deal with winter. They’ll also make a groundhog craft to bring home.
If you’re lucky, Sweetbriar Sam may even make an appearance, emerging from his underground enclosure on the grounds, says Eric Young, program director.
Cost is $10 per child and $5 per adult. The Nature Center is at 62 Eckernkamp Dr., Smithtown. Preregistration is required at 631-979-6344. For more information, visit sweetbriarnc.org.
Other Long Island groundhogs are expected to make their appearances at free events on Saturday. Holtsville Hal is expected to appear at 7 a.m. at the Brookhaven Wildlife and Ecology Center in Holtsville and Malverne Mel is scheduled to appear at 7 a.m. at Crossroads Farm in Malverne. Quogue Library is also sponsoring its second annual celebration at 9 a.m. at the Quogue Village Firehouse in Quogue.
