The Hamptones at Westhampton Beach

The brand-new teen a cappella group The Hamptones is scheduled to open on Saturday evening for Duke University's all-male a cappella group The Pitchforks at the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center. It's The Hamptones' first professional performance.

"I'm extremely excited to do it," says Hamptones member Fred Nydegger, 17, of Hampton Bays. Nydegger uses his voice to make the drum sounds for the group.

The Hamptones, which formed in April, includes kids ages 11 to 17 from East End locales such as Jamesport, Manorville, Southampton and Hampton Bays, says Julienne Penza, managing director of arts education for the Performing Arts Center. The kids have been practicing every Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon -- "so you know they're committed," Penza jokes.

For their concert debut, about 10 members will don their matching purple polo shirts and perform three to five numbers that will include "Trouble" by Taylor Swift and a version of "Dream On" by Aerosmith, Penza says.

Member Emma Galasso, 15, of Westhampton Beach says movies such as "Pitch Perfect" got her interested in a cappella music, which eschews instruments and instead relies on performers' voices to make the sounds that accompany vocal lyrics. "You're creating these sounds with other people, percussive sounds and harmonies, which is really interesting and intriguing," Galasso says.

The Hamptones teen a cappella group will perform at 8 p.m. Saturday at Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center (76 Main St., Westhampton). Tickets are $5. For more information call 631-288-1500 or visit whbpac.org.
