This Valentine's Day, the Pajama Program is asking you to help a Long Island or New York City child in need.

The "Open Your Heart" campaign encourages individuals, companies and groups to provide pajamas and books for children across the country. The Pajama Program dubbed the six-month period from October through March is "Danger Season," when temperatures across the country are often at their lowest. Donations are most common during the holiday season, which poses a problem for children and teens who enter the system after December.

"Giving a child in need a pair of warm pajamas and a book to read is like giving them a hug right before they go to bed," said Genevieve Piturro, founder and executive director of the Pajama Program.

For more information about the "Open Your Heart" campaign and to learn how to donate on Long Island, visit pajamaprogram.org or call 212-716-9757. The program runs through Feb. 29.
