Veterans Day events for kids
Tuesday is Veterans Day, and that means that the kids are off from school. Here are eight fun events to keep your family entertained all day long:
A Letter to My Hero at Long Island Children's Museum (11 Davis Ave., Garden City) from 2 to 4 p.m. Kids can help honor America's heroes by sending them letters of thanks. Appropriate for all ages. Price: Free with museum admission ($12).
Tiny Tots: Animal ABC's at Theodore Roosevelt Nature Center (Jones Beach State Park, Wantagh) at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Children ages 3 to 5 can explore the natural world. Program will connect children and their parents with nature through short walks, animal visitors and crafts; reservations are recommended. Price: $4, free ages 3 and younger.
Animated Christmas Holiday Story at Hicks Nurseries (100 Jericho Tpke., Westbury) from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. A walk-through story featuring child-size animated Christmas characters, including Santa. "Christmas at the North Pole" tells the story of how Santa picks out gifts for his friends, who include penguins, mice, elves and more. Price: Free, nonperishable food items for Long Island Cares are welcome.
It's Harvest Time at Suffolk County Farm and Education Center (350 Yaphank Ave., Yaphank) from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Learn about migrating birds and how the farmer prepares for the winter, and have a treat that can be made from milk; recommended for children ages 15 months to 23 months. Registration is required. Price: $10.
College for a Day at Hofstra University (Hempstead Turnpike, Hempstead) at 10 a.m. High school seniors and their parents can spend the day listening to presentations from current students and administrators, followed by an academic and student services fair. Price: Free.
Sculpture Art Caper and Exploration Activity Backpack at Hofstra University's Emily Lowe Gallery (Hempstead Turnpike, Hempstead), running weekly throughout the year, ending Sunday, Dec. 21. Times vary. Pick up a backpack and solve an Art Caper mystery by unraveling clues found while exploring the outdoor sculpture collection. Appropriate for children ages 5 to 10.
Extreme Rec Day at Southampton Town Recreation Center (1370A Majors Path, Southampton) from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. For students in grades K-6, the event includes lunch, snacks and refreshments. Price: $10.
Storytime at Downs Farm Preserve (23800 County Rte. 25, Cutchogue) from 10 to 11 a.m. A nature-themed story and a craft for children ages 2 to 5. Price: Free.
