Recently we were able to take a fencing lesson at the Suffolk Fencing Academy in Farmingville. None of us has ever done this before so it was a new and exciting experience for all of us.

Students first had to stretch and then learn different foot positions. “Launch, block, cover, and attack” were some of the positions they practiced. Going forward is called an “advance,” and going backward is called a “retreat.” After that we all put on the different parts of the suits, such as the jacket, helmet, and gloves. It was a lot more challenging with the heavy gear on. We learned to block and fight with swords. All of the students agreed that it was so much fun that they would love to do it again sometime. We even got to play a version of Simon Says at the end, and Amanda won! No one knew what to expect, but now it’s known that kids have a really good time — and learn skills like balance and concentration.

The academy is located at 1055 Portion Rd., Suite 12W, Farmingville. Call 631-320-3818 or go online, suffolkfencingacademy.com
