What I learned the hard way about safety
I went through something I hope you've never had to experience. I was hit by a car.
I'm OK now, but I'm here to share some tips on how to prevent that from happening to anyone else. I am also offering advice if you ever find yourself in that kind of situation.
First of all, always walk with a friend. I was walking with someone I'm very close with, and without her, the damage would have been more substantial.
Make sure to look both ways before crossing the street. I wasn't being careful. Always look both ways a few times before stepping into the crosswalk. That is a surefire way to make sure you're safe -- even around crazy drivers. Next, be extra careful in the rain. It's harder for drivers to see you. If they don't see you, the outlook can be bad.
If you are ever in a situation like this, try to stay calm and make sure the driver stays with you and calls an ambulance. Remember to breathe, that everything will be OK, and that you're very strong.
Do not let the driver drive away. The person who hit me drove off after a small chat about her thinking I tripped and me having to explain what happened. That was not a good course of action, so learn from my mistakes.
It's also very important to get looked at by a doctor. Make sure to get the proper medical care.
While this experience was very scary, I'm glad I wasn't badly injured. I use this experience to show others how to prevent it from happening to them. Be safe on the streets.
