With closures of brick and mortar maternity stores all across Long Island (and the country for that matter), one in Cedarhurst is still going strong: 9 New York. The 9-year-old shop is geared toward “fashion-forward women looking for both professional and dressy clothing that is high-end and beautiful,” says Margaret Seewald, owner of the store.

Seewald, who travels to Europe each season to buy for clients, credits the Cedarhurst community for the store’s staying power — she is v-e-r-y busy. She caters, in part, to a large population of the Orthodox Jewish community,  which comprises about 60% of her business, and who flock to the store for her luxe collection of maternity wear.

But her customers come from Brooklyn, Riverdale, New Jersey, and as far away as Canada in search of maternity wardrobes.

“It’s not only modest clothing here, we cater to all,” says Seewald. And she keeps her carefully edited inventory limited. “I don’t want to see everyone wearing the same thing.”

High fashion aside, she says, what really sets her apart as a retailer, is “customer service. We’re attentive and hands on, zippering them up, giving them try-on pillows — we call it ‘the bump,’” (to see how a garment will fare in the months to come). And Seewald really gets to know her customers. “I love these girls. They come in with their moms, their grandmothers, even their husbands and come back even after the baby is born.”

As for the spring mix this season? You won’t find pants or jeans here but says Seewald, “We’re seeing lighter, brighter colors. There’s a green chiffon sleeveless maxi that is just stunning and florals are important.” As for the store’s name, 9? “It’s for 9 months,” says Seewald. But of course!

Prices start at $129 for denim skirts (one of the most popular items in the store) to $125-$250 for tops and $225-$450 for dresses.

9 New York is located at 422 Central Ave., in Cedarhurst. The store is closed on Friday and Saturday and the shop is open most days from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Private appointments are also offered; 516-569-7900, 9newyorkshop.com.
