Who are fashion's "It" girls these days? Well, many are not girls at all but more like (dare we say it?) senior citizens, and Wednesday's news that Marc Jacobs had tapped Cher, 69, to star in his fall 2015 campaign underscores the point. But, in an ad, shot by David Sims, that broke in Women's Wear Daily, there sat one of the world's most iconic divas, wearing a fitted leather jacket, sweeping ball skirt and black leather gloves. Her expression? Kind of a Mona Lisa-meets-a-yeah-it's-me half-smile.

The trend to star mature models in advertising began earlier this year with Joan Didion for Celine, Joni Mitchell for Saint Laurent and Iris Apfel for Alexis Bittar. Jacobs, 52, recently attended the Met Gala with Cher, noting to media outlets that he was "intimidated" by escorting his idol to the ball.

And while Jacobs may be currently serenading Cher with a rendition of "I Got You Babe," it sounds like the designer has more surprises up his sleeve. His Instagram post showing the ad was captioned in part, "This is just the beginning . . . More to come." What's next?
