There's a dark, mysterious air to several makeup lines for fall -- think names like Superstition, Dark Spell, Mystic Metallics. And just launched is Cover Girl's new line based on the upcoming film "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" that brings smoky eyes to a whole new level.

MAC celebrates a legend -- fashion illustrator Antonio Lopez -- with a limited-edition collection of vibrant colors. Eye shadow palettes in bronze, violet or teal combos are $43.50; lip palettes in nude, fuchsia and red are $27.50; at MAC counters and maccosmetics.com.

Laura Mercier has gone to the dark side, with a fall line called Dark Spell. The look focuses on deep, smoldering eyes with six pencils, $24, a kohl eyeliner, $24, and an interesting shadow in a silvery/black combo called Magical that uses a baked technology for longer, crease-resistant wear, $23; at Laura Mercier counters and lauramercier.com.

Christian Dior considers the star to be his lucky charm and incorporated them in many designs. This fall it's the focus of Dior's Mystic Metallics eye shadow palette, with two different color groupings -- Bonne Etoile in warm brown with blue and green accents, and Constellation (exclusively at Nordstrom), in pale pink with silver and purple accents, $61 each. Play up the smoky eye with Dior Addict lipstick in nude or vibrant tones, $31; at Dior counters and dior.com.

Coco Chanel was known for her strong belief in charms and talismans, so her beauty line for fall calls its collection Superstition. Some of the shades to look for: cream blush (a new formula that can be applied with fingers or brush), Destiny and Inspiration, $38; in nails, Mysterious, $27; in lip gloss, Instinct, $34; at Chanel counters and chanel.com.
