A new salon in Babylon Village is missing one thing: a set group of stylists. Instead, Good Day Hair Salon, which opened this month, rents out space to hairdressers who can do their own thing, from scheduling appointments to collecting payments, says owner Crystal Freyer.

Freyer, who has been a hairdresser for 15 years and whose last job was at Salons by JC in Bay Shore, which rents out separate rooms to hairdressers, says she jumped when the opportunity for this store came up.

“I love Babylon Village: I grew up there,” Freyer says. “And I thought other people would like to do what I was doing, but in a salon.”

Currently, Freyer and her best friend, Sarah Andersen are the only two hairdressers, but Good Day Hair can accommodate five.

Hairdressers rent space out and Freyer supplies shampoo, conditioner, towels, capes, trays, snacks and drinks. The stylist just needs to bring their tools and hair color supplies to work on their clients. They set their own prices.

In order to rent space, the hairdresser would have to already have a following. “It’s really for a seasoned hairdresser who has a clientele,” explains Freyer, adding, “You get to be your own boss."

At Good Day Hair, the atmosphere is relaxed, with ample seating for people to simply hang out and a hutch filled with books to read there or borrow.

“I didn’t want it to be a super crazy hustle and get people in and out type of salon,” Freyer explains. “It’s really a one-on-one experience everyone’s having with their hairdresser.”

Services include gender neutral haircuts, styling, color and balayage, a painting on hair technique that gives it a natural, sun-kissed look.

Haircuts by Freyer and Andersen start at $60; color is $120 and up and extensions are $500 and up.

Good Day Hair Salon is located at 260 Deer Park Ave. in Babylon. All bookings are done online, through Instagram: @gooddayhairbabylon or @_sarahandersen. The shop is open Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., by appointment only.
