It isn’t often that a major fashion label for the uber-wealthy (and really uber) attempts a major change-up -- you don’t want to throw off the Upper East Side set -- but J. Mendel designer Gilles Mendel decided to rock his fashion boat a bit. His collection is full of luxe separates: fur vests, tulle skirts, crepe tees.
No gowns. Well, OK, no need to get the defibrillator. There were a few, but the fact that this label -- known for its drool-worthy red carpet confections -- chose to focus more on separates signals a major trend to come in closets from Oyster Bay to Beekman Place.
No worries -- you’ll still look fab in the sliced cavallino tank and embroidered tulle skirt, along with a python / pony / calf clutch tucked under your arm. And, of course, those clear mesh booties.
Other standout looks include that killer python -- either on short shorts (worn with a gray goat vest) or a motorcycle jacket (with patent mini). If you’re game for fur, besides that goat vest there’s shadow fox and perforated mink. And bag addicts will love the art deco patterns -- and that black mother-of-pearl minaudière, which if you listen carefully … may be calling your name.
