Nicholas K: Hip city slickers at New York Fashion Week

The urban cowboys at Nicholas K’s early morning show probably would be more at home in Williamsburg than on the range wearing luxe duster coats – some mixed-media jobs of leather, canvas and fur – chunky sweaters, and slouchy sweatpants presumably named for country crooners – the “Gavin,” and the “Garth.”
Despite the cowboy hats, boys with shoulder-length hair and girls in crisp Cleo wigs, the look was anything but Western cliché: the fringed stuff was often sparkly lame, prerequisite boots sported wedges and tough buckles, and the stormy color palette – steel, onyx, granite and black – was perfect for city slickers.
Of note, the designer's accessory du jour – tortoise-shell necklaces. We mean tortoise shell – the whole shell of a turtle – hanging from chunky beads. They looked great, but here's hoping they were fake for the sake of those turtles.
