Nike does a Hamptons-inspired sneaker
Hamptonites and sneakerheads (you know those sneaker collecting types) can celebrate another new Nike today –the Air Force 1 x Hamptons.
Yup, you got it, a Hamptons-inspired sneaker, the second Long Island-themed shoe from the company (you might remember the hoopla surrounding the first -- the Nike Jones Beach version released last July and re-released late this May) will turn up on the shelves at tony men’s and women’s boutique Blue & Cream in East Hampton today. There will only be 144 pairs available – all men’s sizes 8-13, and storeowner Jeff Goldstein says, “We expect people to be lining up.” The kicks will be sold at Blue & Cream exclusively for a week, moving on to more mainstream athletic shoe venues after that.
From a style-standpoint, the crisp new shoe fits the name. All white calfskin with airy perforations – “it’s a perfect Hamptons summer shoe,” says Goldstein. There’s a signature laurel leaf H crest embroidered on the tongue tab, and the foot bed of the left and right shoe reads “Good Ground,” signifying the original name given to the area once populated by native communities. The sole – a transparent gel – reveals a silhouette of Long Island. A modern day Gatsby might replace his white bucks with these.
And speaking of bucks, the box price on the shoe is $125, but because of the demand, Blue & Cream is selling the sneaks for $160. “In the Hamptons, you have to assess some sort of premium for the shoe.” Keep an eye on eBay for more, er, premium prices on the style (the Jones Beach Nike sold there in the $1200 range last time around).
Blue & Cream is located at 60 On the Circle, East Hampton. 631-329-1392.
