At Serendipity, all of the merchandise comes from women-owned businesses. And, if she has her way, owner Kim Lagonigro will have everything in the shop actually made by women as well.

Currently, about 70% of her stock is women-made, says Lagonigro, who recently opened her Sayville shop.

“I just want to give a voice to these women,” says Lagonigro. “Just being able to promote the creativity that they have and to help them succeed with their small business is important to me.”

Serendipity specializes in accessories with a few clothing items. “My clothing is sort of like an accessory, where I have kimonos, caftans, and cardigans; a few undergarments, like bralettes, that type of thing,” says Lagonigro.

In addition to American made items, Serendipity carries merchandise made in fair trade workshops around the world.

Handbags, which start at $35, run the gamut from casual summer straw bags, tote bags, crossbody bags, hobo bags, clutches, to fancy evening bags. There’s also a selection of vegan leather bags and a few leather ones handmade by a California artisan.

There’s a wide array of jewelry: necklaces, bracelets, anklets and earrings, most of which Lagonigro calls, “statement earrings,” that start at $12 and go up to $60.

“They’re unique and also, big and bold,” she says, adding that she just got in a new line of earrings and necklaces handmade in Australia.

You’ll find scarves for both warmth and accessorizing and summer string and vegan cinch belts.

In millinery, there are Fedora-style wool hats handmade in South America, that can be worn year-round and summer straw hats made out of rattan, as well as straw visors.

To further promote some of her Long Island and U.S. vendors, Lagonigro plans to designate a day each month, starting in August with a Wantagh jewelry maker, where shoppers can meet one of the store’s artisan suppliers.

Prices start at $12 for anklets or earrings and go up to $85 for a larger summer straw or leather bag.

Serendipity is located at 130 Main St. in Sayville. The shop is open Wednesday to Thursday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, noon to 4 p.m.; 516-765-5741, serendipitysayville.com.
