St. John got into the Fashion Week scene for the first time in the brand’s almost 50-year history on Wednesday night, showing the fall collection in the above-the-store showroom at the Rolex Building on Fifth Avenue

And while we were expecting a vibe that might have been a tad mumsy, well, it wasn’t at all.
Models posed on large, white cubes, and of the 25 looks, sure, there were plenty of dependable, ladyish ensembles (you know exactly the sort) knits in serene neutrals — camel and gray — some expected — all quietly luxe.

More interesting for sure, was a surprise focus on sportswear and — get this — glamour.  A little white satin T-shirt was collared in fox fur and paired with a flannel gown skirt —
so languid, and sleek.  For more razzle-dazzle, a plain V-neck long sleeve knit sweater topped an all-over sequin floor-length skirt.  There was even a burgundy satin jumpsuit . . .  worn by standout model Alek Wek . . . at St. John!

Creative director George Sharp said the collection reflected the notion of not trying too hard.  “It’s effortless, chic and glamorous,” he said.

And speaking of glamour, wow, the company’s new jewelry collection — fantastic ropes of semi-precious stones and horn mixed with crystal — graphic, gorgeous and gettable next fall at prices that range from $200 to $300 (but look like they cost a million bucks).
