Westhampton native Jennifer Kelling Niles named her Madame Mathilde jewelry line after Mathilde from an 1890s Guy de Maupassant short story. In it, she attends a ball proudly wearing her society pal's diamond necklace -- loses it! -- then spends her life savings to replace it, only to learn it was fake.
