A huge, swirling lace graphic backed Tadashi Shoji’s runway heralding the exquisitely beautiful line-up of special-occasion dresses (and we mean special...like the Academy Awards) inspired by the Golden Age of Shanghai. Opulent fabrics – that incredible lace, chiffon, silk and velvet – conjured royalty.

Silhouettes were both modest but smoldering – blousons, nipped tea-length affairs, tiers and columns – not a miss in the bunch – though train-like “extended hemlines” gave models a bit of trouble.

Showstoppers included an emerald chantilly lace gown – poetry – and a regal, red velvet cowl-backed number inset with beaded lace. Of late, Shoji has been winning his share of red carpet clients and with this stunning collection, more are sure to follow.
