Thakoon goes red, redder, reddest

Thakoon Panichgul is seeing red — or a slight variation thereof — pretty much everywhere he looks. Whether it’s satin shift dresses with a neon light pattern (in orangey red); a leather dress with cinched waist (cherry), or a bouclé hooded blazer, a crepe and crinkly patent blouse and a paper bag waist skirt (scarlet, raspberry, fuchsia).
The designer, who showed his Thakoon collection at the Plaza Hotel on Sunday, is a master at color combinations. And the clash and sass of competing reds in one outfit is what will get his customers noticed. There’s even a hearts-and-lips pattern on a skirt, slip dress and bomber, for kitsch appeal.
Neutrals get some play, too — oatmeal shifts and a coat are adorned with basket weave panels. And an oatmeal angora bomber was paired with a high-waisted trouser. These seem serene in contrast to the major brights in the line.
But will anyone wear the uber-thick, double-faced gray knit slip dress, padded and sculpted into a slightly exaggerated hourglass shape. Appealing, to some, perhaps, but it seems more an abstract experiment than the kind of dress most women would want to put on.
