Vera Wang in Wonderland

Alice in Wonderland served as muse for Vera Wang, and her show at the tents at Lincoln Center certainly felt surreal, or a bit like a fairy tale, what with the diverse, high-wattage front row — Beyoncé sitting opposite Serena Williams (talk about a talent show-down), Kim Kardashian opposite former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright (when’s that gonna happen again?).

Wang certainly has broad appeal, and with this collection, it’s easy to see why. She sent down the runway a series of gossamer-light, layered ensembles: with corsets, cropped vests and sheer skirts cut high in front, long in back. Much of the line was white (like the sweet, spider-webby eyelet tank with textured gauze leggings and vest). But there were some pops of color (yellow), and an 18th century French wallpaper pattern distorted to look abstract.

Other “trippy” elements, as Wang called them, included intriguing — if maybe a tad showy — added-on peplums with psychedelic prints and those bubble skirts in organza or tulle. All of it soft, dreamy, romantic.

While in Wonderland, Alice was confronted by signs that read, “Drink Me” and “Eat Me.” Now VW’s gone and thrown a third sign into the mix that Alice won’t be able to resist: “Wear Me.”
